1841 Burchell
« on: Wednesday 27 September 06 18:34 BST (UK) »
Have just found this site- it's so good!
I've found loads more contacts!! Thank you.

In another message thread is a record of 1841 census
Little Lordings, Billingshurst

William Burchell, 60, Carpenter
Elizabeth do, 40
George do, 20
James do, 15
Walter do, 12
Ann do, 10
Rhoda do, 8
Jane do, 6
Eliza do, 4
Maurice do, 2
Elizabeth do, 1

Can you possibly tell me where William was born as I cant find any birth records for him c1781. Is it mentioned in the 1841 census?
I know he was married 1815 at Shipley.
Wife was Norris.
Am trying to get back the next level to Williams parents and his siblings.
Also to see how William was related to Luke born 1776 who I have 6 generations for including me.
Also looking for Luke's parents. I cant find Luke's birth in Sussex like William so wondered if they were somewhere else.
Thanks

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  The 1841 census only says whether someone was born in the county or not.  It does not give a place.  Also you need to be aware that ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 so William could be up to 64 years old and his wife 44 etc.

Are you aware that Elizabeth Norris was his second wife?  The Sussex marriage Index shows that he was a widower of Billingshurst.  She was a spinster and married with the consent of parents.  Witnesses were Geo and Ann Bishop.   I did wonder why she was so much younger than he was.

When I do a search on William or Sarah and that date there is no record under FamilySearch.org.
Where did you get that info from please?

Hi Sussex

Elizabeth remarried to someone called Edward Giles.

Elizabeth and Edward were living in Rackham by 1861 with two of Elizabeth's children Maurice and Elizabeth.

I have extensive information on Maurice (or Morris) Burchell if you are interested.  Please PM me.

Thanks Downside
Thanks for the link to your website- amazing collection of information!!
I still cant get back past Maurice (b1838)'s father William b1781 and mother Elizabeth.
I am hoping William was brother of Luke whose father was Nathan, but no evidence yet!
Any ideas?

I found the marriage on the Sussex Marriage Index - a CD published by the Sussex Family History Group of all pre 1837 marriages in Sussex.   Not all parishes are covered on the IGI so it is very useful.
