Hi, Norrie G,

Thank you for the information listed, I will have to do some searching to see if there is any connection to my Ramsay's.
I have been finding it fairly difficult searching for connections as Ramsay seems to be quite a common name.
Once again, thanks you very much

Hi Swingteacher,
Thank you for your offer regarding the Ramsay's who are from Kilconquhar.
Any information would be really helpful.
It would seem that my ancestors nearly all came from Kilconquhar, Largo and Ceres.
Unfortunately it is or seems to be a common name and is quite hard finding the family connections.
Once again, many thanks for your offer.

Hello hantsguy,

I see that your original post dates from some time ago.  So I wonder whether you have found further information in the interim (so we don't duplicate searches which have already been done)?

Also (so that we know what we are trying to find  :) ) whether you hope to take an ancestral line further back, or to find out more information about related people, or to find other descendants?

In your original post, is this a direct line?
Either or both of John Robertson RAMSAY (m 1899) and George RAMSAY (m 1903)
to
John RAMSAY who m Agnes ROBERTSON in 1865
to
William RAMSAY who m Janet Wilson WISHART in 1815

Incidentally, in the original post John RAMSAY's birthdate is given as 1822 - the IGI lists the birthdate of John RAMSAY, son of William RAMSAY & Janet WISHART as 1820.

Do you have proof (certificates, entries in the OPRs, censuses, etc) of the lineage?

If you are trying to trace William & Janet further back, did they live on into the time of censuses or (better still) statutory registration?

Janet Wilson WISHART
You say that you think Janet was a daughter of David WISHART & Hannah MITCHELL (however spelled).  As you will know from the IGI, this Janet was b 1792 in Largo.  The IGI also has a marriage record for David & Hannah, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh in 1787.

In the light of Scots naming patterns, it seems that these are the right parents - given that William & Janet named their first daughter Hanah and their second son David.

Unfortunately, nothing jumped out at me that would help trace David & Hannah further back ...

William RAMSAY
Naming patterns of the children suggest that William's parents might have been John & Mary.  I could see in the IGI only two Fife births which might fit.  If you are certain that he was born in Largo, then the following seems most likely - John, son of John RAMSAY & Mary WISHART, b 3 Sep, bap 4 Sep 1791, Largo Fife.

There's an LDS submission for the marriage of John RAMSAY & Mary WISHART - 24 Nov 1787 in Lower Largo.  A free search on ScotlandsPeople (I didn't download the result) indicates that there was indeed such a marriage in Largo on that date.

But you probably have all the above  :)

Good luck with your searches,

JAP
PS (added later): I see from a later post of yours that you've probably traced the RAMSAYs back a long way:

And is this you  :)

Norrie, it looks as though you've searched the Kilconquhar graveyard for RAMSAYs in the past on another list (for someone else):

Hi JAP,

Thanks for your message.

Some of the information on my original posting I had got slightly wrong as I was very new to family history. ::)
yes you are right i have managed to trace back to 1695 the paternal side, with images of births, marrages and some deaths all from scotlands people, but have hit a brick wall there.
Its the off shoots that I am struggling with, siblings and their families.
John Ramsay b 1723 at Ceres  wed Elispeth Smart in 1758 their son John b 1764 m Mary Wishart 1787 at Lower Largo.
child of above is
William Ramsay b 1791 wed Janet Wilson Wishart  at Kilconquhar 1815
Child of above is John Ramsay B 1820 who wed Margaret Henderson and then Agnes Robertson.
Child of above was George robertson Ramsay b 1868 in Kilconquhar.
He was my grandfather.
I live in the south of England so ALL my searching is done on line, I hope to be able to get up to Scotland one day to search the records. So any information I can get is so very welcome.
Once again thank you so very much

Hi Jap & huntsguy , now you brought it up I can remember doing
these lookup for Judy in the states

she was researching this family

Subject: RE: [FIF] Graveyards for Kilconquhar Residents

Hi Norrie:

Once again, thanks for your reply. I'll list my ancestors below and any
dates I have for them. I'm jumping into the 1700's with my research, and
the trail is getting sketchier. Any help you can give is appreciated. As
most people on this list have mentioned, your kindness is much appreciated.

William RAMSAY may have been born in Largo; Janet WISHART, unknown
birthplace; all their children were born in Kilconquhar. I assume they died
there as well.

GGG-Grandfather: Married Janet WISHART 1815 in Kilconquhar.
*William RAMSAY, born circa 1790-95, died ?, blacksmith
Janet WISHART, born circa 1790-95, died ?
Children of William & Janet:
Hanah RAMSAY, born 1816, died ?
Mary RAMSAY, born 1818, died ?
*John RAMSAY, born 1820, died 1883 in Kilconquhar, blacksmith, my
GG-grandfather
David RAMSAY, born 1822, died ?
Male Child RAMSAY, born 1823, died ?
William RAMSAY, born 1825, died ?
Thomas RAMSAY, born 1828, died ?
Henry RAMSAY, born 1831, died ?
Janet RAMSAY, born 1834, died ?
Agnes RAMSAY, born 1836. died ?
Margaret RAMSAY, born 1836, died ? (I think Agnes & Margaret were twins

GG-Grandfather: Married twice; I'm descended from wife #2:
*John RAMSAY, married wife #1 Margaret HENDERSON 1842.
Their children all born in Kilconquhar as far as I know:
John RAMSAY, born 1846, died ?, Blacksmith
William RAMSAY, born 1844, died ?
James RAMSAY, born 1857, died ?

*John RAMSAY, married wife #2 Agnes ROBERTSON in Colinsburgh in 1865.
Their children all born in Kilconquhar as far as I know:
Frederick Melville RAMSAY, born 1866, died ?
George RAMSAY, born 1868, died ?
*Alexander Murdoch RAMSAY, born 1871, died circa 1968 in Canada
Helen RAMSAY, born 1873, died ? in Canada

That's it for the Kilconquhar tribe. Very prolific, as you can see. I'm
hoping at least some of them are buried there with markers.

Thanks in advance for your help.
