Carmarthenshire Research - A Visitor's Guide?
« on: Friday 29 September 06 13:52 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful for advice about how to research in Carmarthenshire, to be assembled into a Visitor's Guide on the Carms board.

We have a (small) list of resources on the board, but having tried to locate ancestors I know how puzzling it can be - not least because of the shifting county boundaries.

This is an appeal to those who have done some research in the area:

* What were the best places to go? (virtual or in person)

* Which resources do you find indispensable?

* Any tips on using local record offices - parking, booking, use of laptop etc?

* Specific hints - if a particular graveyard is overgrown, but has been transcribed for example?

Carmarthenshire is lucky to have a small band of very helpful looker-uppers, but I feel sure that there is an untapped reserve of expertise out there.

Any experiences, hints or tips would be more than welcome - maybe we can eventually produce "visitors guides" for many of the counties?

Thanks for your time

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks Liverpool Lass

OK a resounding silence on this one - does nobody research in Carmarthenshire?  :o

All offerings welcome - especially if someone is near a church and can offer MIs or even to tell us whether the gravestones are still standing.

Anyone?

 :)

Good try Arranroots! I am finding this county particularly difficult on the Internet so don't give up yet - somebody out there must know something!

Hi Stormgazer

Thanks for the offer - there are often posts on these boards that could do with your assistance!

We don't post our email addresses but if you want to try answering queries your help would be very much appreciated.

Alternatively, if you have specific resources or are visiting the libraries/įrchives you can post an offer of your own.

Welcome to Rootschat!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

hi i have found the local  reference library to be really helpful in regardsnews paper look ups and also street names and photo's.  i have also been told that the local registry offices are really help full in person or by phone and take payment by card for any cert etc

there are a lot of ancestry sights also, and don't forget local books a good source of information and plenty to purchase locally or over the net about the old carmarthenshire and near by towns

I have also found the woman at the box cemetery very helpfull in finding burial plots.

Thanks for the recommendations Tegan - and welcome to the board!  :)

We aren't blessed with the abundance of resources and volunteers that some counties seem to have (and of course our surnames can be a little repetitive, lol!)  so we appreciate anything that will make life easier for researchers who can't visit the lovely county of Carmarthenshire personally.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
