Where is Clysterfield?
« on: Friday 29 September 06 17:55 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know exactly where this farm or croft was? It is listed in the 1841, 1861 and 1881 censuses in the same enumeration district as Hawkhillock, Mount Pleasant and Springbank, but it is the only address listed in 1881 in that enumeration district which I cannot find on the modern Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 map.

It is also missing from the online 1877 OS map.

I reckon it has to be somewhere on the east (right) bank of the river, fairly close to the bridge.

Any ideas, anyone?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you for this, James.

Since posting the original query, I have (with help from various people) managed to pin Clysterfield down to within a hundred metres or so, though it seems to have vanished without trace since the 1881 census.

My interest is in my mother's cousin's paternal line, surnamed Tulloch, who were in Clysterfield until the 1851 census.

You're welcome.  I can tell now Mansons aren't what you were looking for :) but there is one Tulloch listed in the phonebook (192).
