TAYLOR family - Cricketers Arms, Broad Heath, Presteigne.
« on: Wednesday 18 February 04 12:33 GMT (UK) »
John TAYLOR (born c. 1823 in Rmwych Colva,Radnor) was publican of the Cricketers Arms, Broad Heath, Presteigne in the 19th century.

He married Margaret (born c. 1827 in Cwm Clyro, Radnor).

They had children Harriet, Edwin (who took over the pub after mother and father) and Sarah Ann.

Barring the 1881 census I cannot find any more on John and Margaret.  Does anyone have them in their tree, or know Margaret's maiden name?

Hi,

In 1911 my GG Grandfather James Taylor from Cleehonger, a Mason then Farmer and Publican, was running the pub and after him his daughter Mary Gittings (I don't know exact dates). I wonder if there is a family link or it is just a coincidence?

There was a Taylor running the Old Bell in Byton. James Taylor built the (new) Bell Inn up on the main road with a shop and some houses, again conincidence of link?

Have you found anything more about the Cricketers Arms? I understand it is a private house now, but I am not certain. I need to look at some old directories of the area.

Saw your comments about the Cricketers Arms.   James Taylor was the brother of my great grandfather Michael Taylor married Sarah Ann Hesp in 1868 at Stratford, London in 1868. He died at Ilford in 1911.

James had 7 children, of whom only 3 survived.   Mary married a Gittings, Amelia married Richard Edwards of the Courthouse, Byton and had at least 6 children. I believe that the family still farm there.   A great grandson of James, John Edwards lives at The White House, How Caple and was at one time Chairman of Herefordshire Council.   The son , Arthur, was unmarried in 1911.   Are you descended from the Gittings or the Edwards please.

Oddly enough I will be in Hereford next week for the funeral of Trevor Taylor on 28th April.

I should be pleased to hear from you.   My Email address is:

                                  John Taylor

You may have already seen the information in the book "The Pubs of Radnorshire" by Tony Hobbs, but just in-case you haven't - Page 101 has some quite useful information with dates etc, on the Taylors at the Cricketers Arms, Presteigne.

It may be of some use to you.
