where now?
« on: Sunday 07 November 04 22:56 GMT (UK) »
My journey so far has been quite easy; in a few months I have traced back to the early 19C with little effort. I have located my ancestors in west Somerset, but am unsure how to progress further. I am unable to travel to record offices as I have two under fives and am unable to drive.  Can anyone help with suggestions of how to progress further?
I have a certificate of marriage for 1841, for Robert CHIDGEY and Anne Stevens, Williton Somerset, with his father being JOHN Chidgey.  I have found numerous possibilities and am unsure how to progress. I do not know exact birth of Robert or correct surname spelling as so many variations!  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. ???

The marriage will also give you Robert's place of residence at marriage, the occupation of Robert and his father John and the witnesses could be siblings. I suggest you request a lookup on this board for the 1841 census for the address given on the marriage certificate.

Good Luck

Chidgey - what a great name.  And Stogumber another excellent word.

Put the 2 into Google and you get a few interesting finds.

When you have limited time or mobility it is worth keeping hold of every scrap you find when you have an interesting name.

For example...

There are a few Chidgeys in the graveyard that could end up being related. Y'never know, though they are recent burials.

Here's a list of random 1851 census with plenty of Chidgeys (inc Richard I think)...

Thanks to those who replied to my original request for help.  It seems my next avenue will be the 1841 census. The marriage certificate I have gives residence for both parties as "Wiliton" -  no actual addresses. Also, the witnesses to the marriage were of the bride's family. As yet, I am unaware of any of Robert's siblings which would be helpful but I will continue with my search.
Again, thank you for your help.
