"also known as"
« on: Tuesday 03 October 06 10:42 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have a marriage certificate in which the groom is listed as Frederick William McCullock (also known as Frederick McCullock).  Does anyone have any thoughts on why this might be mentioned - it seems rather an irrelevant detail.  I've scrutinised it closely in case the McCullock could be spelt differently as in McCulloch, but it looks identical... :-\

The Registrar General suggested that the clergy adds both the full name and the name commonly known as with the word "otherwise" between them.
This is normally done when a person is using an alias, it seems this vicar chose to be safe than sorry and included both forms just in case.

Thanks Guy

- seems like it was a rather pedantic vicar.....it was at a Presbyterian chapel, I wonder if that had any bearing on the vicar's attitude.

Cheers
