Joehboy, the boatman mentioned in the 1851 census probably had something to do with the canal barges that carried the coal down from the Rhondda valley, as barges were used at that time, and the adress is quite near the river.

Joebhoy,if you go to the Wales on the Web site, web adress, www.cymruarywe.org/cayw/index/en/942/978
and enter the online heritage trail, or alternately you could just google in Nantgarw history, you will find out quite a lot about nantgarw, at present it is in Taff Ely not Eglwysilan

Joebhoy, I think the place you are looking for is Whiterock in Nantgarw, also in the 1800, there was a public house there called The Butchers Arms, I dont know if this confuses the issue, but I thought it might help

You may find this helpful in relation to nearby places

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Eglwysilan/Nantgarw/

It appears throughout the census that the hamlet they were living was Rhydyfelin, with variations on spelling.  Check Genuki Rhydyfelin and it will take you to the above link again.

This is a long shot!  Google just came up with this thread although it is from 2006 I am hoping Runningbear is still active and may have had some results he/she is willing to share. Although I read in one post that Genealogy was off his list!
I am tracing the Smith family from Eglwysilan and Whitchurch, Glamorgan JAMES SMITH born 1821 in Bath, Somerset

I Have
JOHN FREDERICK SMITH BORN  1908 PONTYPRIDD, GLAMORGAN    DIED 1976 BURNHAM, BUCKS
JOHN RICHARD SMITH     BORN  1881 WHITCHURCH, GLAMORGAN  DIED 1946 ABERTRIDWR, GLAMORGAN
JOHN SMITH                    BORN  1859 WHITCHURCH, GLAMORGAN  DIED 1883 PONTYPRIDD, GLAMORGAN
JAMES SMITH                   BORN  1821 BATH, SOMERSET                  DIED  1881 GLAMORGAN, WALES

I have James in all the possible censuses and he was married to Ann ? and is married to Ann with a one year old daughter Sarrah.   in the 1841 census.  So I am hoping that you have discovered more about James and Ann Smith.

With fingers crossed,
Regards,
Abiam2
