I'd  agree with the previous post, a form of Mary. The gaelic being Maili/Maille.

Thank you. another relative could have been called Polly, does that have an Irish origin too?
Actually these 2 are a bit confused, I was told about a Polly but I have only found a Molly - if you see what I mean!
Thank you

Polly = a pet form of Molly, so it could well be the same person.

Thank you, I think that must be right, so now I'll try and find a 'Mary' Sheerin!

Hiya poppyo,

I had a look at a webpage of Irish Girls Names. Molly could be an alternative for Mary but there are a lot of alternatives ... Hebrew: Miriam, Greek: Mariam, Latin: Maria. Maire, Marion, Marian, Molly, Mollie, Moira and Maura are among the variants.

If you stick religiously to Mary and only search for that name you may not find your ancestor. I'd suggest considering all alternatives.

The Island Graveyard.
Sheerin / Flynn in Geashill, Rathfeston, Daingean.
Ballyduff.
Daingean.
Baptism in Daingean.
Griffith's Valuation (Sheeran).

Molly/Mollie can also be a nickname for Margaret.
