I have a will of an ancestor, John Hanson of Coulby for 1695. In it he names a number of farms around Colby. I lived in Colby for a number of years but can not locate the farms at all. I have a small copy of a tithe map dated 1860 of the Colby village up to Hawkrigg but no mention of these places.
The farms are
TOWNE END, Colby Fields
- as stated in the will "Towne End Close by Estimaron seaven Acres be it more or less situate lying and being within the fields and Libartiss of Colby aforesd at the end of the said Towne"
Does any one know where this is? Where was the end of the village in 1695?
BYSTEADS CLOSE - "Bysteads Close within the fields of Colby afoursd" The only Byesteads I can find is near Morland.
BURWANG - I think this could be BURWAIN which is just outside Colby near Kings Meaburn
HAVERSBAURGH - this must be close to Burwang see entry in will below.
"And my said two daughters shall have a way with carts to pass and repass along on my Close called Burwang to the said Out Havesbaurgh at any time when they have occasion without let or hinderance"
Any help with locating these would be gratefully received.
Judy
P.S. I now know that there is a 'Berr whang' inColby -wang meaning meadow. Different from Burwain.
Also a 'Haverbraith' which I think could be the Haversbaurgh.
Still don't know the loacation of these though.
