Passport Applications

Anyone know if these are online for 1880 - 1900 period and searchable by name.

I believe 1837online does - any other resources known ?

The records at 1837online are unfortunately not searchable and the images of the lists are not even 100% alphabetical.  Each list covers one year and you have to look through the lists for surnames starting with a particular letter (usually around 10 pages so it can be quite an expensive process!) as the entries are in chronological order.

Passports were not obligatory for travelling abroad in the 19th century so it's possible that even if your ancestor left the country during this period, he/she may not have had a passport!

I don't know of any other sites which have copies of these records.
