Use of Maternal Grandmothers Surname?
« on: Wednesday 10 November 04 15:26 GMT (UK) »
Was it usual for children to have their maternal Grandmothers surname as a middle name?..... ???

It is said within my family there is a Scottish link as
My Grans brother was named 'Joseph Fairbairn Musty'
Their mothers maiden name was 'Lane'

As yet I have not been able to trace beyond their mother on that line.....mainly because they were born in India and their mother 'Ruth Margaret Lane' was born in Aden(south Yemen) :-\

HI Sharon,
I've got one line of my tree (from Cumberland) that included the mother's maiden name for all of their daughters middle names and another "family" name for all of the boys!
Don't know how common it was though.
Good luck

Hi Claire,

I also have the use of mothers maiden name down one branch of the family......but until now I havn't come across the use of surname that wasn't the childs mothers...... ???

Of the 5 children he was the only boy and the only one to have been given a middle name that was a surname.

Hi Sharon,
This is quite common and good news for us researchers ;)
Try this site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/index.htm
It's an index of middle names derived from the IGI and has been very useful to me in the past.

It was certainly commonplace that the mothers maiden name was used in such a way. Another common thing was place names (towns / villages) used in names aswell

 :)

I have got my grandmother's maiden name as my middle name - Challinor :D

The reason......................my Mum decided that as my Nan was one of four girls (who did all marry)  then it would be nice to carry the name on.

It has caused me loads of problems over the years, especially when people decided to add it my maiden name and make it double-barrelled - Challinor-Jones!!!!!!  I still get letters from the hospital now addressed to
Mrs Challinor-Lloyd >:( >:( >:( >:( Very annoying!!!!!

Myfi

re Aden... some things to consider:

1. GRO's overseas BMDs (consular and military) which are now online at www.1837online.com

2. TNA -- try their online catalogue to see if they have any Aden records

3. possibly the British Library's India Office Collection (which is not restricted to the Indian sub-Continent)

4. possibly even the Guildhall Library in London

There may be similar records in Scotland that I am not familiar with.

You could also try e-mailing the British Embassy or one of the two Consulates in Yemen http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029395231 in case they can help but don't hold your breath...
