GILL family in R.I. USA census 1910+ census. Help please
« on: Monday 23 October 06 10:33 BST (UK) »
In 1910  the family of William and Ada GILL  was in Pawtucke, RI.  Their children were:
Hargreaves GILL b 1904,
Edith GILL b. 1906
Wm GILL b 1907.
There may be more children in 1920 census.

If anyone can tell me what 1920 and 1930 census have about these people I'd be most grateful.
William GILL died in 1932 and his wife in 1960 both dying in Pawtucket.  Anything about what happened to them and their children of of great interest to me.

I should add that William  GILL's father  was named Hargreaves GILL as was his brother and several nephews- so if several turn up in a search they will all be mine and of interest. Unusual names are a bonus, provided on is forewarned.

Thank you,
charlotte

Grub,
Thank you. As I thought possible another child there - Harry b 1912.  That's progress.

May I ask a further question about what you sent please?
What was the date of the 1920 census?  The reason for asking is that there are 2 Harry Gills in SSDI, neither in RI- one born 18 Dec 1912,  the other born 11 July 1912. I'm just wondering which of them would have been  8yrs old on the census return.

And, if I am not pushing it too far, is there anything on this lot in 1930 please?

Thanks again Grub,
charlotte

Hi Charlotte
1920 census was taken 7 January 1920 for your Gills.
I am having difficulty locating any of them on the 1930. :'(
Hopefully someone else will have more luck.

Grub,  Thanks for that date info.  Being in Jan  and given the 2 birthdays I was looking at in the SSDI, the Jan census date does not give me the answer.

You say that the date " for your GILLs"... does that mean that the census date differs for different states? Or is it nationwide on the same date as in UK genealogy with which I am more familiar?

Thanks again,
charlotte

Hi Charlotte
Sorry, I should have been more specific.

The 1920 census was scheduled for January 1.
Census takers were given instructions, for example, that if a child was born between Jan 1 and the date they arrived (Jan 7 with your Gills), they were NOT to be included.

But, if someone was alive on Jan 1, but had died by (Jan 7), they WERE to be included.

In other words, people in the household on Jan 1 were the only ones counted.  Obviously, it was impossible for the enumerators to cover such a large area in one day.... ;D

Hope this makes it clearer for you.

Regards,
Grub

Hi grub,
Thanks for the info.  In January, the enumerators  must have found it  tough going weatherwise to make the rounds in some parts of the country  . Our last census, forms avaliable for electronic lodging, sure made it easier in terms of collection!
Thanks again,
charlotte
