History - Hamner - 1834?
« on: Saturday 28 October 06 08:13 BST (UK) »
I would like to know anything about Hamner in the 1830's especially Bettisfield.  Could anyone tell me if there was any epidemic around there at that time.

Also, between 1819 and 1834 one of my ancestor's was a tailor but cannot find him on the 1841 census, does anyone know if he would be listed anywhere in a directory as I can only find directories of the Wrexham area in 1840's.
William Turner 1760, ??
William Turner 1788, Hanmer, Flintshire
William Turner 1831, Bettisfield, Hanmer, Flintshire
Richard Turner 1865, Shut End, Stafford
John Turner 1883, Wrexham, Flintshire
Robert Turner 1910 Standish, Wigan, Lancashire
Maurice Kevin Turner, Chorley, Lancashire

Hello Dorey,

If your tailor was living in Bettisfield or Hanmer I wouldn't expect him to be working there, unless jobbing, or any village in the Maelor as they're too small. Wrexham seems too far away. Ellesmere and Whitchurch seem better bets sepecially once the railway was built (no I don't know when that was) because Bettisfield had a halt on the line between the two.

I'm sorry, I don't know of any directories for either town but maybe someone can help,

Chris

Hi Dorey

I'm not terribly well up with the Hanmer area at that time - mine had all moved by then.

However, there was a general UK wide cholera epidemic in 1832.

Another thing to bear in mind is that many of the Wrexham area EDs are missing for the 1841 census, including Ruabon, Gresford, etc. It would be worth checking Ancestry for the Hanmer area. Checked - Hanmer appears to be there but parts of Threapwood, Worthenbury, Iscoed are missing - see

The Clwyd FH Society have produced a CD Rom of Trade Directories for North Wales - 1818 - 1836

Hope this helps.
