Another deciphering job
« on: Thursday 11 November 04 15:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi again

It looks like the residence of Elizabeth Walford below is Coshams Iron works, York Road, Kings Cross.  Its not that clear though so I would welcome a few second opinions.

Does anyone know if there is a list of such Iron works in any genealogy records. Using the spelling above I've found nothing so far.

Well I am definately no expert, as I often have to ask for help, but I would agree with you except the a could be an O or U
giving Coshoms or Coshums.

Try Cotham I've seen this as a name. There should a directory of trades in your local library.

You may find it is linked to the following information I found re Ironworks in that area:-

St. Pancras Ironworks, London "...the disused nineteenth century St Pancras Ironworks, in a courtyard off York Way in Islington." (excerpt from this BBC article titled Heritage protection tax urged
"...St. Pancras ironworks, a building which is considered to be the most significant unlisted building in the immediate area." (from a United Kingdom Parliamentary report)

The St Pancras ironworks is where Sir Henry Bessemer made bronze powder and later produced the first steel in quantity. It was here that the pilot plant for the Bessemer Process was located. Bessemer came to what was then "Baxter House" before 23.9.1841 and established his works behind the house. The site was cleared about 1870 for Midland Railway coal drops.

Hope this helps.

It may be Cotham's Iron Works. I don't know whether this is the name of the proprietor or a town/village. There is a Cotham near Bristol and one in Nottinghamshire - south of Newark-on-Trent.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

trystan,

Can you do your zooming trick on Column 7 of the certificate as well, please?  The name is repeated there and the comparison might help.

Thanks

Nell

PS I've found the iron works marked on the map right next door to Kings Cross Station but no name visible.

Many thanks for taking such an interest.  I do appreciate it.

Helen,

I found it on an old map - it doesn't exist today.  The sites to look at are:

http://www.victorianlondon.org
Click on maps and choose the area right next door to Kings Cross Station (always assuming you know sufficient about London of course).  York Road runs roughly north south alongside and the iron works are on the east side of the road.
or
http://www.londonancestor.com
again scroll down and choose maps and somewhere in there is a link for Islington (south) I think.

Both sites have a lot of extremely interesting information on them should you decide to let you mouse finger do the walking. :)

Nell

If trystan can do the zooming trick, I'll let you know what I think it says.
