1871 Census - Place Lookup
« on: Tuesday 31 October 06 11:29 GMT (UK) »
In the 1881 Census there is a McCarthy family living at
35 Little Frederick Street,  St Mary,  Cardiff.

These McCarthy's are quite tough to track down due to many other McCarthy's with the same Christian names and similar ages also living in Cardiff.

Difficult to find in the 1881 census because there first names are only listed as initials .  RG11 5279/48 page 53
James McCarthy W age 50 Ireland
James McCarthy son M age 24 Cardiff
Ellen McCarthy D.in law age 25 Ireland (nee Barry)
and a lodger probably Ellen,s sister

Note that we have them in the 1891 Census.

How easy is it to look up this address in the 1871 census and see if James and his son James and other family members are living there.

Hi,
You can find Little Frederick Street , Cardiff on the 1871 Census with the following reference..
RG10/5360  137  28
Unfortunately i can t see the McCarthys at no 35, but worth checking again.
          Hope you find them eventually,
 Best wishes

Thanks Cathy

I think that I will need to have full access to the Glamorganshire 1871 to sort these families,  perhaps it is available at low cost as a CD or another low cost method.    Luckily we have a Marriage certificate for James and Ellen and some info handed down.

For the McCarthy line we have
James McCarthy b.~ 1831 Ireland
James McCarthy (son) b. ~ 1856 Cardiff.  There are two possible births in the GRO,  one dated 1855 and the other 1857.

For the Barry line we have
Michael Barry (father) b. Ireland
Ellen Barry (daughter) b. ~1857 Ireland.

We know that Ellen and family came over from Ireland when she was 7.
Also at Ellen's wedding in 1880 the witnesses where James and Margaret Barry.

I post these just in-case someone has the ability to look them up.

1871 - RG10 Piece 5360 Folio 139 Page 32

Civil Parish: St Mary  Cardiff

29 Hanley Street

Michael Barry 39 hd, m,  shoe maker, Ireland
Ellen Barry 40  wife, Ireland
Ellen Barry 17 dau, wood cutter, Ireland
James Barry 13 son, w*** worker Ireland
Ann Barry 12  dau, stick seller Ireland
Michael Barry 8  son, Ireland
Mary A Barry 6  dau, Cardiff
John Barry 4  son, Cardiff
Ellen Cummins 79  wid, Mother in law, annuitant, Ireland

Does not look like the Barry family are on the 1861 - poss still in Ireland.

Cannot locate the McCarthy family, Maybe they were visting Ireland on census date?  Possibly others will have more luck.

Regards

Cas

Many thanks for the Barry family,  we are 100% sure that this is the correct family with the bonus of the Mother In law.  They came over from Ireland in about 1863/4

We have James McCarthy family in 1891.  Ellen died in 1890
They where living at 6 Hills Terrace in St John Cardiff.  Most of this area was destroyed a long time ago and is now a car park.

James (head Widowed) age 35
Joanna age 9
Margaret age 6
Mary Ellen age 5
James age 3

Thanks for looking for the McCarthy's in 1871,  I think that our next plan is go back to 1861,  may be easier to find in this census.

Hi Robham, these Mc CMarthy's are a tough bunch.

Check the common board, Ancestry.com have a three day free access 1-3 Nov, perhaps you will have more luck in finding them 1861/1871.

Good luck
