Was this anywhere near Mark Lane? My grandmother had a bakehouse there....behind the old public baths.

Mark Lane ran from the harbour to Strand Street.

Have some documents relating to some of the neighbours but none with that address - can go to records office and look up what you are searching for - but its relativley recent - I could give it a go - let me know

Hello Mary,
Thanks very much for your reply and your kind offer. As you can probably tell  I am new to this Family History game.Do you think there is any chance that any info would be in the records or is it as you say too recent. I would be glad of any help at all on this as i seem to have come to a dead stop.
Thanks again
Bob

There are Electoral Lists in Whitehaven Records Office though not necessarily for those years.  The lists in those days would have males of 21+, but only females over 30 would be included.

There should also be street directories but people in rented accommodation were not always included in those days.

Hello Geoff
Thanks for the info it seems that things don't look to promising at the moment.I am not sure if they owned the house or were lodgers I would assume that they were lodgers.Do you know Strand St and if you d are the houses large or small. the reason I ask is that having traced my other great granddad i found that they lived in a house with seven other families it was pure luck that they were on the records at all.
Thanks again

Strand St - as it is now - has 2, 3 and 4 story houses on one side, and generally modern buildings on the other - the side nearest to the harbour. There was a compulsory purchase arrangement for the houses on Mark Lane - to make way for the construction of Mark House - the tax and benefits office and, you are quite correct, there may have been several families living in one building. I know someone, in their 70's, who was born there......if you let me know the names, and rough dates, I could either go to the records office, or speak to someone who actually lived there.

Hello Mary,
Thanks for the offer the family I am interested in are the Taylors (Cecelia Susan in particular) and the Listers. my dad was born at 70 Strand St in 1922 and i know that Cecelia was still there in 1925 she was married in 1925 to John Lister and they had a child in the same year. I hope that this helps I know its a bit thin but info is proving to be very hard to get.
Thanks again
Bob
