Where would one locate Irish Census [notably Cork - Clonakilty]?

Were there ever any?

I know Clonakillty from my childhood.  But where would I actualy look to find real names of real people?

It gets worse: my folks were McCarthy...grandad John [aka Jack] died in 1956 before I ws born & I dont even know his birth year - he fought at the Somme but his Army records dont have his birthday or birth place..he had brothers: Callaghan, Patrick and Daniel - all reputed to be born in Clonakilty.

Patrick ['uncle Paddy'] went mad - possibly as a result of experiences in the WW1 trenches [?] and died in Cork asylum.  Daniel married Mary DRISCOLL and had a big family in Cork City. I have met them.

My grandad married Eizabeth LOSTY in Dublin [sometime in the 1920s] - My Dad was born in Dublin - they had 2 more children born in Cork before Elizabeth died. The LOSTYs are fairly well documented as far as Irish FH goes but McCARTYHYs...?!

Hi Cathy,
The 1901 census of Ireland, and the 1911 census, are the only two surviving complete censuses. You can look at both at your local Family History Library - look up familysearch.org to find out where your local branch of the Latter Day Saints library is.
The census is available on microfilm; you go to the library, order and pay for the film you want, it's only 3 or so pounds, then wait till they phone you to say it's arrived.
But before all that, you need to know the address of your ancestors.The townland is the basic land division in use, and is vital to know if you want to be sure you are looking at the correct census. Especially with a common name!

THere are lots of sites with advice on starting basic Irish research, many listed on the rootschat boards at the top.

google for  Francis Guy's directory of Cork 1875 - 1876, choose the ginni swanton site hit, and you will see the name of Callaghan McCarthy listed, under 'China ware merchants'! and also under 'principal landowners'. Maybe this Callaghan is the father of the boys you mention?
