Messrs Hopkins and Peggs Shoreditch 1891

Hi everyone!

I am looking for any info on Messrs Hopkins & Peggs of Shoreditch.
On the 1891 census, my grt uncle John Peacock, 18, porter, was 1 of 29 people living in 7 dwellings at High St Shoreditch. Their occupations range from tailor's, draper's and porter's. Written down the side of the census is the name 'Messrs Hopkins & Peggs'. Another dwelling in Bethnal Green Rd also has this company's name and stables written under it. (RG12/242 p 23/24).
I'm interested to know if the workers just lived in these dwellings or did the company own them and that is where they worked from.

On the 1901 census, my John Peacock was now living in Stoke Newington and his occupation was a 'carpet planner', any ideas what this would be?

Try an enquiry at the Bishopsgate Institute & Library, they are at the lower end of Shoreditch High St opposite Liverpool St. Station.

I have looked at the site and I tried to email them twice but it didn't go through, I will try again another day.
As I don't live in London it would be difficult for me to visit the library at the moment.

Try the Hackney Archives, when I went to the Bishopsgate Library to enquire about rates paid on business premises in Shoreditch HIgh St in the 1840s I was advised to go the Hackney Archives.

The dwellings as she remembers were on the property and part of the building which occupied the whole block. My Great Gramps was a night watchman and my Gramps was born in one of the 4 or 6 dwellings there. When the one partner died, the other just as elderly guy sold up because the council wanted to widen the road. He gave the guys a 500 pound severance package. An absolute fortune. I dont know how this site works so that you could get my private email and I can give you my Grans email then eventually whatsapp call her
