Just a couple of snippets...

Their dwelling in C1901.. Doctor Terrace... was named after the adjacent mine, where the males would have worked.. The Doctor ( or "D") Pit ( one of several pits owned by the Bedlington Coal Company.

Trivia Angle... the Doctor Pit produced mainly steam coal, then later mined steam and household coal.

In 1934 a Samuel Burn Tyler was killed in the Doctor Pit.

Above info from web site of Durham Mining Museum.

See  site    communities.northumberland.gov.uk
, Bedlington section, photograph gallery, to see photos and old maps of the area ( Including pics Doctor Pit folk in 1911 strike, and map showing Doctor Terrace, close to pit yard)

Many thanks to everyone who has helped out on this one.

Extra thanks Michael for the interesting info on the mines and the web site.  I am going to enjoy going through that.

It really makes it interesting when you can find out something about these people's lives instead of just collecting dates.

More Trivia,

The dog, the Bedlington Terrier, was developed by early coal miners for hunting rabbits and hares.

Pub in Bedlington called the Bedlington Terrier.

The local football ( OK then soccer to our US chums) team play in Doctor Pit Welfare Park. The team is called Bedlington Terriers. Supporters/fans chant goes..
" Terriers Woof Woof, Terriers Woof Woof ! "

Locals might pronounce Bedlington as " beddle-t'n".

The world's first malleable iron rail tracks were invented and patented in 1820 by the Bedlington Iron Company. This allowed rails to be made much longer, without cracking, snapping as they had done previously.

Stop me, somebody. (Kissimmee's fault for encouraging me)

K,

The pit death was in the Durham Mining Museum site...

Under every mine/colliery, there is a list of all the fatalities.. he died in Doctor Pit, Bedlington.

Morpeth District Registration Office, covered a wide area, including Bedlington. ( But there was a sub-district office at Bedlington, to save folk's shoe leather )
