1901 Census - Missing Name - Army?
« on: Monday 23 February 04 00:32 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Robert Albert Widley, London.  I can find my Gran, Florence Haggerty, born 1888, but not my Grandfather on the 1901 Census. I'm assuming he may have been old enough to be in the Army then, but were do I look for list's of Army personel in 1901? Please.

Hi there Cee-Gee

If grandma was born in 1888, then I would have thought that grandad would have been about the same age - making him about 13 in 1901; That would have been to young to be in the Army.

I looked on the 1891 census for him assuming he was about grandmas age - there was only 2 Robert Widley in the whole country; one was 30 years old and the other was 3 years old - see details below.

RG12/ 59/ Folio 172/ Page 37 – Number 47, Godfrey Street, Chelsea, London
WIDLEY  Robert, Head, Marr, 30, Boot maker, Kensington, London
Mary A, Wife, Marr, 29, Dorking, London
Edith R, Dau, Unm, 7, Chelsea
Robert A, Son, Unm, 3, Chelsea
Frances M, Dau, Unm, 1, Chelsea

Hope this fits in with your research

Someone else put this on: a list of those in the Boer war.

Sorry, I didn't keep a rocord of whom, or I'd have said thank you.

Chris, that's got to be him at 3 years old.  Many thanks, how did I miss the 1891 Census.  I'm going to have to start spending serious money... which is already earmarked for my other hobby!

Pauline, I tried the Boar war for those sites shown on RootsChat, but as Chris's looks very promising, I'll have to go with that.

Now to my Aunty (nee. Widley) who is old, deaf, grumpy and thinks I'm a lad about town (at 62, I wish) and see if this stirs any memories with the names.

I am wondering if you found Robert Widley.
I am interested in finding the siblings of George
Widley, younger brother in the same household - at 47 Godfrey Chelsey, London, Eng.
I would be delighted to find sisters or brothers of George.

My grandfather and his brother both joined the army at the age of 12, as boy soldiers, so the 13 year old could have been in the military.

Hello Cee_Gee.
You have probably solved the mystery of Robert Widley by now but I thought you may be interested to know that I  have been researching this name for a friend in Canada for over a year now. Having gathered a lot of documentary evidence I believe that you are one of his long lost cousins. He descends from George E Widley who went to Canada in 1914. I am at present extending the research for him, with the intent of establishing contact with relatives of his in this country. There seem to be quite a few. Is there any interest in this project for you?
Delbois.
