Tesloff immigrant from Germany, 1800s
« on: Sunday 14 November 04 14:02 GMT (UK) »
Advice pl on any likely souces that might help with details of a German ancestor, a John Tesloff, who settled in Stilton Northants in the early 1800s. He married a local girl in 1828 and featured on the 1841 census as being 'born in foreign parts'. Would there be naturalisation papers or such like for someone like this?

You may have visited this link:

Anglo-German Family History Society:

Their knowledge may well assist you in your search for your German ancestor

Naturalisation records from 1844 are at TNA in Kew. See:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/naturalisation/default.htm

Normally you can search TNA's catalogue online to see if Tesloff is mentioned but it has been down a lot this week, seemingly unable to cope with increased traffic during Remembrance week and the Ian Hislop show on WDYTYA?

Not all people who came to this country became naturalised, so don't be surprised if you don't find him in the Naturalisation records.

If this is the correct man (the only one on the National Index 1881) He is listed in the 1881 census as being born in Huntingdon Stilton:
