Nithsdale Brandon Lower Burdekin
« on: Saturday 18 November 06 13:28 GMT (UK) »
Can any one tell me if Nithsdale was a farm or an area of Queensland ?.  I have a relative who was married there and i dont know if it was an area or property. George Ratcliffe married Elizabeth ann Boorman in 1898 he was from stoke on trent and she was originally from Newcross In London . I have their marriage cert and his death cert , but i am curious to find out more about the area etc and any relations of hers that may have been living near by.
Any info would be gladly digested !

every little helps

There are some Boorman names in the Ayr cemetery that you may recognize

http://www.burdekin.qld.gov.au/services/registers/viewBurialRegister.asp

Brandon is a town about 11 k north of Ayr in North Qld, Burdekin is the region and is mainly farming.  I have not heard of Nithsdale though.

hello  there littleblue

you  have in  the subject

Nithsdale Brandon Lower Burdekin

was  this  how  it  was written on  the marriage  certificate please

I only live  about 85ks(Townsville/Thuringowa)  from Brandon  which is a very small town  outside of Ayr  in North Qld  as stated - the Area  is known  as  the  lower burdekin  because  of a  very  large  river "The Burdekin"  that runs  through it.

It  is  possible  that  Nithsdale  was  the  name  of the  place/station/Farm  at  that  time  at  it has  been charged  by  the owners over  the  years.  The station  out west Nithsdale  lies between  Mount Isa  and Boulia  a distance  of  about approx 1000ks

I  believe  thats  it  is  a place  in  Scotland  and also  one  of  the early  ships  bore  the  name

so  it  would  be  interesting  to see where  the  information  came from

regards Jenn

Littleblue, a check of the 1903 Qld Electoral Roll has this -

George Ratcliffe, Farmer
Place Living: Nithe's Dale Farm
Polling Place: Brandon
Division: Herbert

Elizabeth Ann Ratcliffe, Domestic Duties (other details same as above)

There were a couple of Boorman names in Brandon as well

Yes, Jenn

At least we now know what was meant on the marriage certificate

I guess it could have been named after the Nithsdale near Mt Isa or maybe it was a place name in the family somewhere.  Just a coincidence?

Funny how an answer will lead to another question
