MMmm can't find out when the town became called Picton or why! Anyhow have found two PIctons on passengers lists arriving in Auckland but thats it. Mr E Picton, arrived 11-11-1885 on the SS Arawata and a Mr Picton ( no name or initial) arrived March 5th 1870 on the SS Constance

Well I found out why its called Picton, but i hon't hink its anyhting to do with your family. ( Unless you have the gentry hidden in it!) This is from a website in NZ

The New Zealand Company sent Francis Bell to purchase the land from the Maori who agreed to move to Waikawa. In the next few years there seemed to be some doubt as to what the settlement should de called. Captain Steine had named it Horne Bay in 1832 but it was renamed Newton Bay in 1847. New Zealand Company officials suggested Cromwell and Beaconfield which were used briefly before Picton was finally adopted in honour of Sir Thomas Picton, the hero of Badajoz, one of the Duke of Wellington's generals in the Peninsula War. Sir Thomas died in the Battle of Waterloo.

Looking at the names you mentioned I found a John Joseph Picton who married a O'SHANNESSY in 1886. I matched this to Averina Louisa O'Shannessy.

I've found a burial of a John Joseph PICTON at Karori Cemetery in Wellington NZ in 1892 aged 44. Other Picton names on the inscription are Llewellyn Picton, Eric Picton, Averia Picton, and a Winifred Mary Picton died 1978 aged 90. These are likely to be his wife and children.

A William Picton, age 30 from ENG arrived in Nelson on the ship SPRAY in 1855.

Are any of these names possibilities?

The name John Joseph PICTON does feature in my family tree - so Thank You!
Is there anyone in NZ who's possibly related and could piece the family tree together?
I must admit I had hoped to find other related Picton's as I have a few I can't find - in adulthood - here in the UK! My feeling is they emigrated - but tracing them is so hard.
Related to the Picton's through marriage was MARIA CLARA HOWARD - who married OSBORNE PAWSEY. With no trace of them in the UK after 1871 Census (when both aged about 24) I still can't help wondreing if they emigrated. (John Joseph Picton was an cousin of Maria Clara).
That's the 'fun' of family history but frustrating when you hit a brick wall!

The fact that a JJ Picton is buried in Wellington and presumably died there would suggest that he might have other family still living in the area, so I think that first you need to confirm he is the right person.

John Joseph PICTON died WTN NZ 1892 aged 44. Does his age match with a date of birth for your JJ Picton? If so, he could be yours and you should consider getting his death certificate, as this will tell you if he had surviving children, as well as his parents names.

I also suggest contacting the NZ Society of Genealogists (NZSG) via their website http://www.genealogy.org.nz and asking them to print an enquiry in the bi-monthly magazine. There will be a charge, I think, but the Society is nation-wide, not regional, and has 20,000 members. Include all the names you're interested as well as their parents names, and include occupations, areas known to be living, and dates of births etc in ENG.

The NZSG website has 3 searchable on-line databases, which, while certainly not complete, are very helpful:
'Strays and More'
'NZSG First Families Collection'
'NZSG Certificates Collection'
I searched them for PAWSEY but found no reference.
