« on: Monday 20 November 06 06:27 GMT (UK) »
I have a reference to a Fowler child being buried in the Blue Lion burying ground with her sister in 1828 ? Googling it didn't help. does anyone know anything about this area?
Thanks

Keera - what's the source of this? It is such an unlikely name, I wonder if it's a mistranscription.

Hi,
You do not give very much information. It could be anywhere in London or Greater London.

However, the Blue Lion pub is in Grays Inn Road. This is not very far from the Foundling Hospital.

The nearest burial ground is likely to be the burial ground for St Andrew, Holborn. (Pressure on London was such that many churches had burial grounds elsewhere).
This is only a guess, and more information is required, as I have no idea how far away the Blue Lion pub is from the burial ground.

a good site is

Further to my earlier post.
I have found the above named St Andrew Burial ground on the Moto map of London (on line) 1799, and the Blue lion pub is marked as being on the corner.

Of course, that may not be where the current Blue Lion is in Grays Inn  Road.

Unless someone else has a better suggestion.....

The Churchyard is still there, but is now a garden

Thank you all for your input. The reference was written in a transcription. As these children were in fact baptised in St Andrews Holborn, the Blue Lion Burying ground may be there.
Thanks

Hi,

St Andrew's Church, Holborn is on the corner of Holborn Viaduct and St Andrew Street

As church graveyards became full, they added extra burial grounds elsewhere. This burial ground is in Grays Inn Road
The moto map is hard to find.
http://www.motco.com/map/81005/
The site is free, so I will try to attach a jpg.

Top right you can just see the words 'Saint Andrew Bur...'
Across the road, just underneath it clearly says 'The Blue Lion'.
The 'NE' are the last letters of what was then called Grays Inn Lane
Guilford Street is still there and easily found using streetmap.
The burial ground is supposedly still there, in Grays Inn Road, so it may be the small green patch just south of where it says Dental Hosp.
I have tried to compare with the Greenwood map of 1827, which also shows the burial ground, but does not mark the pub.

Hope this helps.
