Captain John Verney Donnelly

Died: 09.10.1917 age 22
Buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery

We have a letter from his mother and a newspaper cutting announcing his death

Second Lieutenant Leonard Wrigley

Died 09.10.1917 age 31
Buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery

I also have a cigarette case of Vivian's with

"From Capt Brickmann to Sgt Dyson 1916" on it. I posted about him before, we are not sure if he was in the 2/9th or not?

Do you have the website up and running yet?

Hi
There were two John Ashton's in the 2/9th Batt WOII 351008. & Pte 351009, Pte J. Ashton's medals were never collected, Both of them are on the same medal roll page.

Remember the 1/9th Battalion & the 2/9th Battalion were in diffrent Division's 1/9th, 42nd Division seeing action in:
1. Egypt
2. Gallipoli.
3. Egypt.
4. France/Belgium.

2/9th Battalion, 66th Division, seeing action in, France/Belgium  only.
It landed in Feb-Mar 1917. So thy are two Manchester Battalions with two differant history's up till 19th Feb 1918, when the 2/9th was absorbed by the 1/9th.

On the 13th Aug 1918 the 9th Battalion then absorbed the 13th (service) Battalion, this Battalion was in France in Sept 1915, then in Salonika (Greece) from Oct/Nov 1915 until 1918.

Cheers

Hi Laura's Mum here.  Yes thanks - we got the address and we've emailed Captain Donnelly's niece.  We haven't had a reply yet, perhaps it would be better to write to her.
My Dad is having a look at all todays info and will add to it - he should at least be able to give you Vivian Dyson's home address and he'll have another look at the photos of Jack Ashton but he's pretty sure it's the one who was an officer.
We'll take some digital copies of the photos to send you but that will probably have to wait until the weekend.

This is the link to the Medal Cards (not the roll page), but the chances are that both 008 & 009 maybe on the same sheet which means, as there are six cards to one £3.50 you should get them both for one fee.

Having said that, I don't think it would give you any info themonsstar & mack have not already done !

Wendi :)

Yes Ann the chaps have done a wonderful job with the website.  themonsstar confirmed it I didn't think the index would help any :D

J Ashton WOII 351008 and Pte. J Ashton 351009 could they have been father & son?

Ann if you can post the photo, the guys can tell so much from the uniform etc.
