Reading the posting on Amelia Suff's family, could anybody tell me what was meant by union? by the side of grandchildrens names, could this have been the workhouse. Jean

I can't see the post you mean, but the Union or Poor Law Union meant workhouse, yes.  Can you post the title of the thread or the URL, please?  Then we can check

Thanks, Tati - trying to do three things at once here, as usual!  ;D

The writing certainly seems to say ditto (Hereford) Union, which I would take to mean Hereford workhouse.

I notice that the address in 1861 is "Hut in wood", which inclines me to believe that the family were not wealthy.

If they were indeed born in the Union, that can be really good news, as there are likely to be records of their mother entering and leaving and maybe a mention of other family members in the Gaurdians Minute Book.
