COMPLETED Osmon/Osman/Hosman in 1891 please
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 17:34 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my ancestor Ruth Osmon in 1891.
Born c1826 in Herstmonceux, maiden name unknown, died 1907. As you see, there are several variants of her surname.

Her husband had the rather unusual name of Lilly in three different census years, and at death in 1875, so it might be right!

In 1871, she was listed as Ruth Hosman 45  in Tower Street, Heathfield, Sussex (I have also found them in 1851 and 1861)

In 1881 she was Ruth Osmon 55 still in Tower st.

In 1901, she was Ruth Osman 75  in Mutton Hall Hill, Heathfield

Children's names include
(Osa, Hosie, Hosea) (male) c1850,
Ruth c1856,
Ellen Burgam(My G-grandmother) c1859,
Sophia Jane c1865,
John c1862
Harriet c1869

Thanks in advance

You could find her maiden name by getting a birth certificate for one of the children.   It should be easy to find the marriage too - not many men called Lilly and all BMDs are free to search on ancestry.

there is a birth of a Lilly Thomas Osman on free BMD in Jul/Aug/Sep 1847 in Hailsham area
Looks like one of this family.

There are several other births on FreeBMD that could be this family too, (e.g Enos Enoch, Jan/ Feb /Mar 1854, Hailsham and John ALfred J/A/S 1861 Hailsham) plus if you go on to the full indexes and look qtr by qtr there are more Osmans who havent been transcribed yet.

Yes, thanks, I have found quite a few myself now, it was just the 1891 record I couldn't find.

Lilly appears to have been short for Lillias. There were at least three of them, maybe more. The other strange names in the family are Burgam (female), Ansley (Female), Enos,  and Osi or Hosie (Male).

By the way, Lilly's marriage, in 1842,  was under the name Lilly HORNER! His wife was Ruth Wood
