Found baptism of Elizabeth Fry, the eldest child in the remove of Daniel and Mary.

So now will try and trace Daniel's brother John (April 1760? Wambrook) for whom I have

Now in Membury, he was born in Wambrook, Dorset. When 12 he went to Axminster & agreed to live with John Seaward for no wages. He stayed 6 years, then agreed for a year at £6 6s, and served 2 years. Then married and went to Membury where he has lived ever since except for a time when he was in the militia, he has lately been discharged."

I stumbled across this thread yesterday while trying to find the antecedents of my James Fry, born about 1786 in Membury. I've been searching for a long time and from half a world away, but one possibility as father was the John Fry you're looking at.

I wonder if this might be him - the John who came to Membury from Wambrook and apprenticed to John Seaward (possibly an uncle?):

FRY JOHN married MATTOCKS MARY 1785 03 29 AXMINSTER (Devon FHS Marriages)

children:
William, b 1790, bap. 1 Jul 1792 Membury
Daniel, bap. 1 Jul 1792, Membury
Marianne, b 1795, bap. 22 Jun 1802, Membury
George, b 1798, bap. 22 Jun 1802 Membury

There is also this:
Mother: Sarah Dunster, Father: John Fry of Membury, labourer,” (Bastardy Papers  Order  2590 A/PO64/14  1786)

As there are no births recorded (that I can find) between 1785 and 1790, I wonder if my James might be a son of John and Mary. Or, in fact, if he might be the bastard born to Sarah Dunster.

Another Fry, John, was born in Membury c.1787, according to censuses and he might also be a son.

(BTW James' son George bap Membury 1820 was convicted of stabbing a man in Somerset in 1841 and transported to Van Dieman's Land. That's my great-great grandfather.)

John Fry, son of Henry Fry (c.1730, ?) and Ann Seward (March1732, Wambrook), born April?, 1760, Wambrook.
The Wambrook register is damaged for many entries from the 1730s to after the 1760s. The exact date of John's baptism is illegible, but in section above 1761
There is, however an early 19thC transcript. The Transcriber found April.

Ann Seward, his mother, was the daughter of George Seward and Ann of Wambrook. Don't know when they married, but I have distinguished this couple as her parents - though for a time I had her confused with 2 other contemporary Ann Sewards in the neighbouring village of Chardstock! She did have a brother, John.

I cannot confirm your trail, but it certainly seems likely. I have found a different spelling  to Mary Mattocks -- Matlocke.

As I am in Portugal, although closer to the UK, reaerch problems are much the same!

Hello everyone, this might be a dead forum (excuse the pun) but I am hoping that some of you are still active after all these years.

My name is Jack Fry and I am trying to build up a picture of my past using a few basic geneology tools. I have dug as far back as the aforementioned Henry Fry c1730 of Wambrook, but have reached a dead end (once again please excuse the pun).

Did anyone have any luck looking further back into the Fry history?

ive recently been looking at my Denning Family ancestors again.
My 4gg is definitely a George Denning, born around 1795/6 in Membury. (from 1851 census)

im trying to work out who exactly his parents are and given the dates i think that David Denning and Sarah Fry are the most likely couple.

Does anybody know where or when David Denning was baptised as i cant seem to find anything for him before his marriage to Sarah in 1791.
