Possibly Lurgan-JOHN F GAMBLE /sea captain
« on: Friday 01 December 06 13:49 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to tie up a connection between my grandmother born Lewendon in India 1909 and her Maternal Grandmother who eloped from Barcelona with a sea captain who i beleive to be John Gamble they married in Calcutta in 1879

I believe there is a connection to a certain Anna Gamble of Barnstable and  Henry Gamble born 1859 Barnstable, Devon and a Rebecca Gamble born in Lurgan.
It's a real long shot but hey !!

Were brothers Frederick William Gamble and Charles Gamble from Ireland? You've also posted on the Staffordshire board but it isn't clear exactly were in the U.K. you think they came from.

Hi thanks for the reply. That's the part we are not sure about. Charles disappeared shortly after their arrival, and their documents were lost. I was hoping that someone had lost track of them or knew anything

Are you saying that you aren't sure even what country Charles Gamble and his brother Frederick William Gamble came from before they arrived in South Africa? You haven't given any idea of dates but civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 in Ireland and 1837 in England and Wales.

In case original poster returns to this thread-

Family Search shows a Rebecca Gamble in 1881 census living in Barnstable in Devon- age 85 (born c1796) and birthplace given as Lurgan, Ireland.

I suspect there weren't any replies to your original request since you neglected to include all the details you knew such as the 1881 census.
Since census shows 'income from dividends' it would be worth checking to see if Rebecca either left a Will or an estate to be administered in England. Also, the informant for her death might be a relation so also worth checking.
Looks like Rebecca Gamble died later in 1881-

According to newspaper, Rebeca died 6 Dec.1881-

1861 Census- Rebecca a boarder in Barnstaple-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M71R-N41

1851 she's in the household of her brother Henry Gamble in Derbyshire- 3 years older than Rebecca and also born in Ireland-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGDW-YY4
Henry's a widower with 24 year old daughter, Martha, who was born in Barnstaple in Devon. His occupation listed as 'incumbent.'

1841 Census lists Rebecca in the household of an Anna Gamble in Devon- in her 80s and born in Devon-

Rebecca's brother Henry was Rev. Henry Gamble and he died 8 Feb.1867-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPCN-PVFJ

1841 census- Daughters Anna, Isabella & Martha. Elizabeth is possibly Henry's wife although not clear who Phillis Gamble might be.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQTF-6CB

1861- Henry's wife is Caroline F and daughter Mary is Mary R. Gamble-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7FW-J3P

Henry Gamble married Caroline Fisgard in 1853-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLSC-RQ7L

This is likely Henry's first marriage- 1816 to Elizabeth Vere Law-
