Hi Sue

Just had a quick look and found a couple of applications for Letters Patent for an invention to convert sewage to manure :-\

Two applicants were Philip Ovenden and George William Wigner.  Philip Ovenden was Christopher's brother and G.W. Wigner was their nephew.  Neither left the UK as far as I know.

Well a quick look at Freebmd Uk shows that Philip O., George Wigner and Will, Cameron Sillar all died in UK

so you may be right they never left,
George Will Wigner died in 1884, [if it is same guy]

Hi

George William Wigner was my 1st cousin 3 times removed.  He was an analytical chemist and founder of the Society of Analytical Chemistry and its first President until his untimely death in 1884.  He was 42.

His brother was John Murch Wigner, a famous Baptist who wrote a couple of hymns that not many people have heard of.

Please don't go chasing this lot - it was just interesting that they turned up on a patent application.

Hi there,

I received the transcripts today, but forgot to post here earlier.

Unfortunately I'm going to bed now so you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

Here's the gen:

William Ovenden d. 14/3/1894 at Cowra NSW
Cause: Cancer of the tongue and exhaustion.
Age 56, Brewer, 31 years in NSW
m1. Elizabeth Susan Russell at St Peter's, Cooks River (aged 29)
Children 1 dau deceased.
m2. Mary Ann Boustes at Nyngan (aged 47)
Reported by Christopher Ovenden.

Christopher Ovenden d. 12/7/1915 at 7 Imperial Arcade Sydney
Cause: Choked on piece of meat
Age 74, Retired Commission Agent, 53 years in NSW
m1. Henrietta Vincent Monkley at Wagga Wagga (aged about 34)
Children: Ruth (Dutton); Nellie Ovenden.
Reported by Nellie Ovenden.

I've left out all the guff about medical practitioners etc but if anybody wants to know just ask.  Poor old Chris, choking on a piece of meat!  What an awful thing to happen.  William was a brewer - brilliant! ;D

Looks like we needn't have worried about Nellie, but it's interesting that she didn't mention her father's 2nd marriage when she reported his death, especially as she had a half-sister living.

From their time in NSW Chris would have arrived in 1862 and William in 1863 but I think it's more likely that they turned up together.  There is a rumour in the family that Chris did not go to Australia by choice - he'd been a naughty boy but we don't know what he did.  The time (1862/3) coincides with the time when the family lost most of its money and property.  Chris & Will's father George (that's him in the picture) died in 1860 leaving about 40 houses and other property.  By the 1871 census his widow was a lady boarder at a girls' school and the family homes in London and Margate left to the older brothers George and Philip were gone.  Jane, his widow, left about £40 when she died in 1888.  The inference is that they had to sell up to get Chris out of trouble but that is just a guess.

I think this transcription thing is brilliant - all that info for not much more than the cost of ONE certificate in the UK.  The Agent I used was Marilyn Rowan and  I got a 10% Christmas discount too!

Merry Xmas & a Happy 2007 to all!
