My basic beginners questions
« on: Tuesday 16 November 04 11:12 GMT (UK) »
If you have the relevant RG/folio/page number is there anywhere online you can order a copy (in a similar way to ordering BMD certificates) or do you have to go to the Family Records Centre ?

Are there any regional Record Centres which store all census information or e.g if I wanted one for a location in derbyshire would I have to go down to the local derbshire library to look up the details?

Not sure about online. Your local family history ctr will be able to assist you though.

Derbyshire County Council will have a full set of the census returns on microfilm at the Local Studies Library in Smedley Street, Matlock. Chesterfield library will have the census returns for the northern half of the county.

Alfreton, Ashbourne, Belper, Buxton, Dronfield, Eckington, Glossop, Heanor, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, New Mills, Ripley, Sandiacre and Swadlincote libraries will have census returns for their particular areas. Researchers should contact their local library

If you do not want to/can not go the records office or FHC this company will send images to you http://www.census-uk.com/

Another option is to use Ancestry.co.uk,  there are lots of discussions about ancestry here already,  but they currently only have
1901, 1891, and part of 1871 available.

....And another option is to use your local LDS family history centre.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

You can order particular films for a small fee.

Or save up loads of look ups and take a cheapie flight to London (assuming you are in the UK) spend the day like a kitten in clover at the FRC - and squeeze in a Brick Lane curry before going home  ;D

Thanks.  I didnt realise LDS held census information (other than 1881), just parish records.
