Hi Trish and Cazay,

Thank you both very much for your help.  I have the entries for his death, and also a photograph of his grave.  A local historian in NSW has helped me a great deal with his life as a farmer in Leeton.  It is only the date and ship he sailed on which is the missing piece of the jigsaw now.

Hi Cathy

It seems from this Archives in Brief description - the NSW archives is where you need to look (which you probably already knew  :(  )

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/archives_in_brief_1_365.asp

Unassisted passengers (also known as free settlers) paid their own way to New South Wales. State Records holds records of free settlers from 1792-1922. Most of these records relate to free settlers arriving in Sydney.

It would seem the records for the later period may not yet be indexed - there may be more information available on the archives web site.

State Records holds records of assisted immigrants from 1828-96

I'm not sure where you will find details of assisted immigrants for your time period - maybe they stopped for awhile until the feds took over ?

Sorry I haven't been more help

Trish

Hi Trish,

Thank you for posting the link to the archive in NSW - I had not found that one.  Very grateful to all rootschatters who have helped me piece my great uncle's history together.   Should I find this information I will keep you posted.
