Medal Card
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 01:21 GMT (UK) »
Can someone make sense of this medal card for Thomas B
Jones. I know that he was in WW1. I know that he lost one leg and most of the other. I am know that he was a private despite the fact that he was a dentist. There is very little info given here.
Thanks

Although not an expert I think KSLI means he served in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry.  He also received the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.  Because he didn't get the Star he must have gone overseas after Jan 1916.   Although it is interesting that nothing is noted in the Entered theatre box.

For more info and maybe more expert advice try posting on the Great War forum at  http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
Also the mother site for the forum 'The Long Long Trail' has lots of info.

Thanks for the info. He did not go overseas as late as you said. He went early 1915. I have tried several times to post on the WW1 formum, both the medal and his photo, but I keep receiving a message. You are not permitted to do something or other so i cannot spend more time on this.
Not sure what the problem is.
Yes, he was in the kings Shropshire light, this much i know.
Thanks

I'm not too sure all medal cards show the full medals. As children we were sometimes allowed to look at my grandfather's medals - about 5, some with one or two bars.  He was a stretcher bearer in the Army Medical Corp and I know I've got the right medal card but no detail of all the medals.  I was told he was mentioned in dispatches several times but nothing comes up on the London Gazette website.  He had an early release due to mustard gas and I should be awarded a medal for looking thro' goodness knows how many gazette pages trying to find a Shearing who wasn't a sheep  :D :D

Can I make a suggestion about the WW1 forum.  Try initially just posting a text query without attachments because there is a size limit and I suspect thats what is happening.  Seems a shame to give up when there is so much knowledge on that forum that I am sure you would find out what you need.

Anne
thank you, I have given up trying to put the medal card and picture of my grandfather on the WW! formum. Time is a precious commodity.

For a man who was wounded, spent many years in war, lost almost two legs the medal card shows nothing.
As far as trying to just add a text to the forum it is pointless without the photo and the card.
I am in the car doing this driving in the dark and resting so time is something I do not have.

got your PM but will answer you here. Thomas Benjamin, Jones 33059, was in the 5/K.S.L.I., this battalion was disbanded in Feb. 1918. Thomas Benjamin medal roll entry only records him being in the 5th Battalion so he must have been wounded before that date. I am not sure went he joined the Battalion but the earliest dates of deaths near his number are July 1917, these are of men who trans. to another Regiment, the earliest of those who stayed in K.S.L.I. are August 1917, this is only a guide. He returned to England 1919 0r 1920 as a son was born a year later
