1891/1901 Census - DILLEY

I am new to this board so please forgive me if I make a mistake in my request.  I do not have a parish, my only information comes for the LDS 1881 census.

The family I am researchin are Dilley, in the 1881 census the names are as follows:

Edward Dilley, 23,  born Eastwick, Hertford.
Maria Dilley (nee Adams), 24, born Cheshunt, Hertford.
Edward Dilley, 2, son, born Enfield, Middlesex.
Edith M Dilley, 1 month, dau, born Cheshunt, Hertford.

Dwelling:  Cheshunt Park
Census place:  Cheshunt, Hertford, England.
PRO Ref:  RG11 - Piece: 1398 -  Folio:66 - Page: 14.


I am interested in census returns from 1891 and 1901 if possible.  My husband's grandmother Elizabeth Rose Dilley was born 11 March 1883, registered Hoddesdon, Hertford.  I know of at least one other brother Ernest and perhaps a sister, Mildred (this might be Edith M - I'm not sure).  I think there were quite a few children in the family.

I presume Alfred J in the '91 census is John in the 1901 census! 

Nice to have Maria's maiden name confirmed!!

The ? mark against Edith's age is due to the image having an enumerators line right through the age.

And you are correct in the number of family - hope they all survived.

On the 1901 census the next family (as they have a double check mark) starts of with
Frederick Drane - son - 36
This is strange as there is no head - but don't think they are your lot - but if you want all their details just ask.

Wow!!

Thank you very much Keith,  I didn't expect such a quick response to my query.

I'm not sure whether or not they all survived, I knew Ernest and Mildred who used to visit Elizabeth at Holker (she went into service at Holker Hall and married and lived their until 1973 when she had to give up her cottage and go into a home.)

We used to go up to visit every Sunday and remember her getting her photographs out, I do remember her telling me of a sister who went to Canada - would be either Edith or Winifred - and she never heard of her again.

I didn't know Maria's parents names but now you have confirmed Elizabeth I have:

John Adams, 58, Hay Binder, born Cheshunt, Hertford.
Elizabeth Adams, 57, born Brickenden, Hertford.

at Flamstead End, Cheshunt in the LDS 1881 census.  I think that must be them.

Is there any chance you could go back to 1871 and find Maria at home with her parents  and siblings please?

Thank you so much for filling out the family tree for me. Most of our family originate in Lancashire and I do have discs for 1871/81/91/01 for this area, these are not name indexed so it takes hours and hours to find 'the family', didn't think I would get further back with the Dilleys without visiting the area, and although it is my husband's side he wouldn't be very happy about spending his holidays sifting through microfiche.  I am still trying to persuade him to go to the I.O.M. to enable me to do some research on my side ....... Keep telling him he could get out walking while I do my research but he hasn't agreed yet.
