Hickes from Stone lookup
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 10:29 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the parents of Thomas Hickes (my g-g-g-g-grandfather) married to Susannah Elizabeth Hupsman on 19 Dec 1786.
Thomas and Suzannah had 10 children:
Frederick bapt 19 Dec 1787 @ Stone
Augustus Thomas bapt 6 Aug 1789 "
Harriet bapt 29 Jul 1790 "
Suzannah Elizabeth bapt 22 Mar 1792 "
Baptist William bapt 16 Aug 1793 "
Henry bapt 27 Aug 1795 "
John Cox bapt 24 Sept 1797 "
Caroline bapt 3 Jul 1801 "
Thomas bapt 9 Nov 1802 "
and Thomas bapt 26 Feb 1806

My g-g-g-grandfather was the youngest (Thomas) and although I have not found a death cert I assume Thomas (1802) died in infancy.  To make the search even harder there seems to be another family of Hickes from Gloustershire who bears the name of Thomas (also 1806) who became a Surgeon and whose father was also Thomas.  My Thomas became the Surveyor of Roads and County Bridges in Cornwall.

If anyone is able to help me on this I would greatly appreciate it

Hello Talkingdrum & welcome to Rootschat!

I think you're probably right to assume that Thomas 1802 died in infancy as along came Thomas 1806.  However, you won't find a death cert for that time period due to registartion not starting until Sep Q 1837.  Before that time, you'd be looking for a burial record in the Parish Records.

Hope that helps a little  :)

Thanks for your reply Debbie, I've tried Parish Records too with no success at this stage.   :'(

Thank you Alf, the Thomas buried 26 Jan 1803 is the 2nd youngest child, the other Thomas, twin of Edward belongs to the other family I mentioned.

I will check on the details of Robert and Mary and see what they bring me!   :)

I have not been able to find anything on Robert and Mary Hickes or been able to verify if the Thomas bpt 17 June 1768 is my ancestor...I'm researching from Australia and so rely on what I can find online.  Any suggestions where I might be able to get more information?  I found Scribes Alcove was a good site and this gave me the info posted above but I have not been able to get anything else from there.

Hi Alf

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply but I've been off line and have only just solved my computer issues!!!

I now know that my Thomas (Snr) is the Cheese factor bapt 4 Sept 1750 at Berkeley, Married 19 Dec 1786 and buried 26 Jan 1803 in Berkeley churchyard.

Thomas Jnr is brother to John Cox Hickes, Town Surgeon.

Thomas Hickes Snr is the son of Nicholas & Elizabeth Hickes, so you have now given me another member of his family, thank you so much.

I guess now I'm looking for more info on Nicholas and family!!!

Regards Kath  :)

Hello, I am wondering if you have links or info on the HICKS/HICKES Family in the Fiji Islands (and Samoa). Common names appearing in each generation from earliest records (late 1700 - 1800s) we can find are WILLIAM, EDWARD, FREDERICK, THOMAS.

Any information will be appreciated  :) thanks!
HICKS - Woolwich, Kent - Australia - Fiji - Samoa - New Caledonia.
BUCKNELL - England, Australia, Fiji.
VALENTINE - New York, USA, Fiji.
KING - China, Fiji.
