Can anyone read this from 1841 please?
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 17:37 GMT (UK) »
This is from the returns for Keady Lincs 1841 HO107/626/10 p5

It's the occupation  for William Popplewell I'm after.  Also Sarah's surname Glebe?  Glens?  On the previous page is her husband William,  a farmer.  I think Wm Popplewell & his companions may have been servants, but I'm not sure.  There are Ag labs on the same page, but I can't make out what these letters are...Help!

Trying to do this family tree for my step Father-in-Laws Xmas pressie, but I want to give him more than just names & dates...I want to give him a picture of how his family lived back then.

Hi Debbie

Fairly sure it's M S which is Male Servant as you suggested.  Seemingly to a local farmer.

Cheers

Great, thanks Biker.  I've not come across them ( M S) in my own tree before but Wm's son was also a servant in 1871 for the same family.

Just need Sarahs surname now  ;)

Excellent!!!  I knew the brilliant people on R.C. would come up trumps.  I'd looked closely at the 1871 too where the son Richard is head of household & again it's not too clear, but I hadn't got to the 1851 yet.  IGI confirms there's Glew all over Lincs!!  ;D

Many thanks to you all,

Debbie

I've got lots of F.S's ... so its logical that there were M.S's too in a big house !   Probably footmen or similar ?

Hi Lydart,

Fascinating stuff, poking around in the past.  Mine were all labourers etc, no servants.  However, looking around the net, there's a fair bit about the Glew family.  I think they were wealthy farmers rather than just getting by ones.

I've been at this all day & the eyes are going now  :D  so I think it's time to put it all aside until tomorrow  ;)

Enjoy your evening,

Debbie
