Sarah Smith - Walworth
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 00:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for any info on the family of this girl.  Born abt 1800 she gave her native place as Walworth in court.  Transported to OZ in 1818.  There could be a connection to a Hardisty family as she states in court (in VDL 1834) that she has a cousin William Hardisty who was also transported.

Not much to go on I know but I'm hoping.   :)

Have you managed to track down the William Hardisty who was transported? Because he might be your best clue.  There's a William Hardisty who arrived 1821 on the Countess of Harcourt to VDL:
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

The same database gives Sarah Smith as arriving on the Elizabeth Henrietta, then going onto NSW 'per Maria'

Another possible link: There is a John Smith m. Elizabeth Catherine Hardisty, 3 Aug 1783 at St. Bride Fleet Street (London) on the IGI.

Hi

Thanks Jorose.  Yes I have the full dirt on master Hardisty, he did indeed arrive per Countess Harcourt.  As for Sarah, she actually arrived Sydney per Maria and was transhipped to VDL per Elizabeth Henrietta and thereafter lived a full life.  Incidently Sarah, William and her second husband Thomas Webb were implicated in the theft of some lamb in 1834.

However, the gem from the IGI at least gives me a lead to chase.  Thanks very much I don't know how I missed it the number of times I have searched the IGI.  I suspect it may be an age thing.

Thanks again   ;)

So is this William's trial?

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_units/1820s/t18201206-61.html

and is this a coincidence or the same man?

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_units/1820s/t18200918-133.html

Pre and post the trial(s) this man or men would have been held at Newgate prison. The Newgate prison registers are held at The National Archives. They contained descriptions of the prisoners and also ususally their place of birth.
Sarah does not appear to have had her trial at the Old Bailey and so is unlikely to have been held at Newgate prison.

Thanks Valda
Yes, the trial in Dec 1820 is my William, I have no way of knowing if the earlier mention was him or not.  I have never seen the middle name of Henry mentioned before.

Thanks for the tip about the Newgate records, however I'm in OZ and I suppose a visit in person is required.   :(

Sarah was tried at Surrey Quarter Sessions  and I have a transcript of that trial.  She was held at Horsemonger Lane, do you know if there are any records for that place?

Cheers

Yes sorry you would need someone to visit The National Archives for Newgate prison records. I'm pretty certain there are no surviving records for Horsemonger gaol that early (if there are any surviving records at all) - the London Metropolitan Archives would be able to confirm that.

Have you accessed the records in the Tasmania Record Office. For transported prisoners I found the Tasmanian records very good.

Yes Valda, Tassie archives have been very good to me. I think I've got a copy of every bit of paper pertaining to all my wife's convicts.

The big problem is working back.

Thanks to you and to jorose for your help on this thread.  I followed the marriage of John Smith and Elizabeth Hardisty that jorose mentioned and found some siblings of Elizabeth of which any of the males could??? be William's father.  Now all I have to do is make a connection.   Do you have any idea how many John Smiths their are???   :o

I think I will start a new thread with a broader look, say under London.

Merry Christmas
