Hi

The only Ann Marshall that I can find within a possible age range is in Minnigaff, KKD - bpt 30 Dec 1771. Parents William Marshal and Janet Gibson.

It may or may not be yours. Note also that Jean and Janet where used interchangeably.

John Wilsons are a little more frequent in the area, as I know to my cost  :-\

Have you tried the Old Kirkcudbright website:

http://www.old-kirkcudbright.net/

It might have something of interest if you delve deeply enough.

Thanks for that very interesting information it was really fascinating and now I know what you mean about digging deep enough they could be the blacksheep that I have been craving for as an interesting story to add to my tree.

The next thing to ask is how can I find out if it is connected to my family as I am new to the scottish research and the details that I have were sent to me from a girl in America while in the LDS church there,

What sort of things would I find out if I registered with Scotlands people I know you have to pay to see the details, does it go back into parish records.

Thanks
Edna

Hi Edna

Most of the Old Parish Records are on the IGI ( www.familysearch.org ) - although not all are online (you can order the ones that are not there via an LDS Family History Centre).

Scotlands People are going to put up the images of the OPRs but so far they are only to order. These are rather fine but £10 each. They do sometimes give more info than is on an index. Other things to look at are the Kirk Sessions minutes (most are in Edinburgh at Scot Nat Archives).

I managed to get quite a bit of info by going to Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire. The Ewart Library in Dumfries is very good. Also think of joining the Dumfries and Galaway Family History Society. They have lots of resources.

Good luck

Gaget you really got me intrigued with the subject of Ann Marshall and her parents but I have tried several places including Scotlands people and Scotlands family tree forum.

The story of John Wilson and Janet Gibson and also William Marshall really leaves me in a need of belonging to these people and all my family have read the tale from the Kircudbright news http://www.old-kirkcudbright.net/genealogy.asp  and we all agree that we would like these people as our blacksheep but so far have been unable to find the link to any of them.

I have Jean Wilson baptised 19 Apr 1794 OPR 871/1 parents John Wilson and Ann Marshall but as yet got no further back

I have Agnes Daughter of Jean Wilson and Anthony Conning born 1815 Sept 7th and the rest of Jeans History after 1851 in Liverpool after the death of Anthony in 1826 as provided in another thread.

Can you give me any more help

Hello Edna

I don't think that i can really help much more than I have already  :(

I found the baptism of an Ann Marshall, bpt 1771, Minnigaff, parents William Marshal and Janet Gibson and listed it on my earlier posting of 23 December 2006. There are so many John Wilsons in the area that it would be very difficult to find the correct one.

What you will have to do is to try and find all the children of John and Ann in birth order. This might help using the naming conventions often practised at the time  (first male child after father's father, second after mother's father' first female child after mother's mother, second after father's mother, etc.)

You don't say whether you have found any banns or marriage for the pair, although it might have been common law.

Wilson is/was the 3rd or 4th most common surname in Scotland so it is very difficult. I have my own and can't get back beyond 1800 so you are not alone. I wish someone would help me!

Thanks Gaget
I will try as you suggest about the other children and the naming patterns.

Thank you for getting me this far
