1851 lookup please
« on: Saturday 23 December 06 09:59 GMT (UK) »
Looking for a Charles Fletcher born in Swansey(?) in about 1836. I hav efollowed the line through his son (Henry William Fletcher, when they lived in London. Looking in the 1871 Cencus (RG10 639/68 Pg 16) the birth place of Charles and his wife Maria, appears to say Glamorgan, Swansey. Any help would be appreciated - thanks.:(

The 1871 states birthplace as Sedgley Staffordshire, it has been crossed as he was not born in in county.  Wife Maria was born in Warwickshire Birmingham

This is a possible ref for Fletcher family 1851

Wow Cas you have a different image to me.  I see the 1871 which does appear to say Glamorgan Swansey for both him and Maria......

But I also checked the 1881 census which states Cambridge!!

I have a possible in 1861 working at the Eagle Hotel, Cambridge St Benedict born about 1835 in Cambridge
RG9/Folio: 5; Page: 3

(although I don't see him in 1851!)

I get a feeling that you have just followed censuses on this one, do you have Henry's birth certificate giving his mother's name and have you found Maria and Charles marriage?  This might help a little as it will at least give their father's names and the address where they were living when they married.

1891 'confirms' Cambridge .... and shows Maria with a PoB of Cambs, SWAVESEY ....

pursuing the Glam, Swansea route shows a possible in 1851 in Merthyr Tydfil, who in turn can be traced back to Cornwall in 1841 - son of a Wesleyan Minisiter.

In 1851 he is born Somerset, 1841 OOC - so that works .... sort of...

No sign of this chap in 1861 however ...

So the Cambridgeshire route seems on balance the best !

Wow! Thanks for all your efforts.

I originally looked at this line back in April and more-or-less followed the route to Cambridgeshire as suggested. I think I do need to get the birth certificate of Charles born in 1836.

I think Charles could have married Maria Bowd (or Boud?). There is a Maria in the 1851 Cambridgeshire Census in Swavesey (HO107/1749 folio 370A. that sort of fits, because she would have been born in 1846, which is 10 years younger than Charles.

What do you think?
