MI - can anyone help please ?????

I am researching a branch of the Neale family who lived all their lives in Burbage Wiltshire. There is an excellent website online for Burbage Family History (run by Colin Younger). Colin very kindly helped me to find an MI for the Neale family but I am totally puzzled by the verse on it. Can anyone tell me where it comes from :

"The race is run
The prize well won
At last - Rest "

Any ideas, suggestions

Washington Allston was an American painter and this was a dirge for his funeral in the mid 1800s. Yep the quote is there BUT I have to ask for your opinion now.

Was it at all a possibility that a village family would have known of an American Dirge ? If not, did the American dirge author, take the words from somewhere else such as the Bible.

I am very impressed that you found it as I tried the words in Yahoo Search and didnt have much success.

I think you're on the right tracks re: a biblical link. I wonder if the words have been used in a Hymn? - not sure if there's a Hymns on line site

just to show how sad I am - constantly thinking about family history I asked a friend of mine in work, who also happens to be an ordained part-time minister if he had heard of your MI inscription, to which he replied that words very similar were often used as a funeral oratory and that versions would have been used for a very long time. His version was,
The person has run the straight race
has passed the finishing line
and has now claimed the prize of Christ himself

aaah I can rest now.......

Sort of as we expected then.

The version that was used would have been cheaper to inscribe of course.

Hi, I can't help with the MI but I am related to the Neale's of Burbage and Wootton Rivers.  Don't know how closely they appear in your family history but are you aware of any O'Neill links to Ireland?
