Cheddar families
« on: Wednesday 27 December 06 16:12 GMT (UK) »
I have put up a Rootschat webspace at www.cheddarfamilies.rootschat.net

It covers a small number of families in Cheddar and Axbridge, but also extends out to others in Chard and beyond.
I have covered only those that relate directly (or almost directly) to myself, but there might be something of interest for other people.

Wilson (Cumbria, Northumberland)

Thank you GAJ.....I have not had any access to Axbridge parish registers at all; I only have a Dwelly's Transcript, and that is limited because the Axbridge bit stops at 1812 or 1813.
The hope of visiting Somerset Records Office myself has dwindled further....I just don't get enough time to go to Taunton, despite being only 40 miles away. One day I will manage it, when family responsibilities are a bit reduced!

The early link, John Day and Jane Harris, is one I had hoped to find before, but just didn't manage it. I had guessed that the surname Harris would feature in the ancestral line but couldnt find a suitable marriage.
As said on my site, nothing was guaranteed accurate, as is the way of things with genealogy; so I am grateful for your extended interest here and for supplying those details, especially discovering "new" children.

Cannyfindit and GAJ - thank you for making this information available. Jane Day and Robert Templer (Templar) are my husband's 4th ggrandparents. This is the first bit of information I have connecting her to her family!

I do have something that is very puzzling. In the two wills GAJ posted, Jane Day is clearly listed as a sister of Mary Day, spinster of Axbridge and is also listed as a daughter of Jane Day, widow of Axbridge. However, when I check the parish records for the family, I find all the children listed for John Day and Jane Harris EXCEPT for my Jane Day b. abt 1880. In the census records, her birth place is listed twice as Axbridge. I have never been able to locate a birth record for her. Our Jane Day was married at St. Mary's Church in Bristol on 7 Sep 1815. Sexa Cuff was one of the witnesses. Could Jane possibly been a neice that was considered family? Any ideas?????

The area was crawling with the Day surname; that's a brain-twister; will have to sleep on that one unless GAJ finds it and solves the problem! You say your Jane was born about 1880.....or did you mean 1780?

I am descended from this Day Family. My great great grandfather, William Crockett Cuff, was the bastard son of Sexa (Day) Cuff, widow of William Cuff and daughter of John & Jane (Harris) Day, and of a man called William Crockett. I welcome any relatives who wish to reach out and share family history. I've learned much, but hope to learn so much more and am willing to share what I know.
