Ballygowan Burial
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 14:11 GMT (UK) »
Happy New Year to you all :D
I have just found out that one of my family William Johnston Walkingshaw was buried in Ballygowan, sadly I don't know where. It would have been about the middle 1940's and I know he was not catholic but thats about all. If any one can help fill any gaps or knows of the family please let me know.
Thanks Karina

Happy New Year to you also Karina.
Could this be your William?

Check out these additional Walkingshaws in Ros Davies' wonderful site for County Down. Saintfield is parish next to Ballygowan. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/W/WadWam.htm#wal

From  http://irishgenealogy.ie  I found this:  WALKINGSHAW FAMILY   UNKNOWN Dates   SAINTFIELD   DOWN
This is a CofI graveyard.

Hope this helps you Karina.

Hi Karina,

Walkingshaw would still be a name from that general area - I looked at www.bt.com and found one in Saintfield which is not too far from Ballygowan. Perhaps they could help.

Regarding the burial, there is a large Presbyterian Church in Ballygowan with an attached cemetry:

__http://www.presbyterianireland.org/congregations/ballygowan.html

I'm sure they will have a record of who is buried there, I see there is an email address. I think the nearest C of I church would be at either Kilmood or Saintfield - guess Saintfield would be best bet going on what Pat found.

Hope this helps

Most Presbyterian churches in Ireland didn't keep burial registers in the past but might have a map showing plots in the graveyard (and not all churches have maps and some are fairly recent). Some Presbyterians were also buried in Church of Ireland graveyards but sometimes the rectors didn't enter Presbyterian burials in their registers.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Did Presbyterians keep records in the mid 1940s ???

A message to the NI Libraries SEELB Local Studies could help.

They should have copies of the Down Recorder for that time.

Visited the family today at Ballygowan PC - No sign of a Walkingshaw, although the name rings a bell. Looked in 1st and 2nd Saintfield and COI -no trace - when I'm passing Kilmood I'll have a look-

regards and good luck
