Durham - Johnson, Thompson, Scott

Hi there, I am hoping that someone out there will be able to help me with a sticking point.

I am looking for the ancestors of my grandfather Thomas Alfred Johnson, who past away in March 2005. He was born in Blackhall, Easington, Co. Durham in February 1923. His parents were Lillian Thompson (now Crutchley after her second marriage), born circa 1914 also in Blackhall, Easington, Co. Durham, and Tommy Johnson, D.O.B and place unknown. However, I am told that Tommy Johnson is not his real name, that he changed his name to avoid national service and that his real name is Joe Scott.

If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

If Lilian is still alive then presumably she has various certificates that might help you?     The marriage certificate would be very helpful.     If she is reluctant to hand them over then you can search for them online.  They are free on www.ancestry.co.uk   Choose the complete version.    There is also a link to Durham BMDs on the resource bit of the Durham board.
Finding Tommy Johnson's death might help too - someone  may have given his correct date of birth on it.

Lilian L. Thompson married Thomas H. Scott in Durham in  1923.

Their marriage was registered in Aukland in the September ¼ 1923. GRO Ref 10a 459. You can order the certificate from

The certificate will give you the names of their fathers.

A more likely marriage, although it is in 1930, is that of Lilian Thompson and Thomas Johnson registered in Easington in Jun ¼ 1930. This is seven years after your grandfathers birth.

The plot thickens!   There is something wrong here.  If he was born in 1923 she was a very young mother.  The marriage in 1923 would be illegal too.  Hope you can afford to get the certificates and put us out of our misery!!

She would be 17/18 which is not illegal. (c1914 to 1922)

Sorry! Thomas Alfred Johnson was born in 1932 not 1923.
