I wonder how and where these two met!  I've searched for their marriage  in all counties with variations on the name, but without success.  The only marriage of a William John Hackleton to a Sarah (possibly) took place Aberystwyth in Dec qtr 1846 to a very Welsh sounding Sarah Evans.  As you say, Hackleton/Heckleton/Hukelton is quite a rare name, and the only Heckleton & variants death between 1871 & 1881 is that of a clearly incorrect Willliam Valentine Heckleton age 39 in Islington in June qtr 1873.

As you suggest, there is a Gaydon in Warks, though not, as far as I can see, a Gadon.

There is a slight complication as far as Sarah's children are concerned.  In 1841 they are noted as having been born out of county, yet in 1851 daughter Jane staying with her aunts in Warboys gives pob Huntingdon, as does son George with aunt Jane in Warboys in 1901.  Something to do with their inheritance again??

Possible marriages for George, assuming that he was living in Hunts at the time or came to Hunts for a bride, were:
1852 Huntingdon  Sarah Jacobs
1856 Huntingdon  Sarah Harvey
1856 Huntingdon  Mary Hull
1856 Ely  Ann Padget
One of these will no doubt belong to George the shepherd.

Of course, we still don't know where our George was in the intervening years or what he was doing ...

Thanks again, everyone.

Gill  :)

I think the Liverpool George Maile in 1881, mentioned by Tazzie,  is worthy of further research. Liverpool is only just along the road from St Helens which is where Sarah was in 1871, and I can't find a Whithorpe in Hunts. I wonder if it might have been an area of Huntingdon?

I've been through various directories and gazetteers, and can't find a Whithorpe in Hunts, or indeed anywhere in the country!  With a name ending in -thorpe it should really be in Cumbria or Yorkshire or Viking country (some of my family lived near Milnthorpe in south Cumbria, for example).

Have you seen the image?  Is the name clearly written?  Didn't they usually also give a county name, if the person was born out of county? Sorry about all the questions, but this gets more intriguing as we go on.

I've also been trying to find George on an outward bound boat, heading for one or other of the colonies (particularly sugar-producing areas), but no luck so far.

Liverpool would have been a convenient port of departure, wouldn't it?

I love it - Jane Creamer Maile married (possibly) Lewis Brissolari, surely an icecream man!  Sorry to be so frivolous, but couldn't resist it.   :D

So, St Helens, Liverpool and Manchester.  And George Farey Maile married in Liverpool in Dec qtr 1861 - 3 options of brides there, but there is a Mary Harrison among them (also Ellen Hampson and Ellen Thompson, possibly the same person, as we also have George Tarey Maile in the group).  Looks as though he is the potato salesman in the census.

Actually, if Jane did marry Lewis Brissolari (I know there's a missing 2nd man's name on the Free BMD entry), they may well have emigrated, as I can't find them in any census records, though there is a Frederick B born in Blackburn in 1886, surely too late to have been their child.
