I have to say that this last couple of days have advanced my research more than several fruitless earlier attempts.

Thanks, Liverpool Annie, for the additional information. I have met Jackie Millband-Codman (of the Colwyn Bay branch of the Codman family) and was aware of the Codman family tree as posted on the P&J site. The 1881 census info is brand new for me, and I'll try to incorporate that into what I know.

I think that you're right - Charlotte is the daughter of Richard, as listed below.  Music Hall artistes and Romanies...I didn't think that would turn up in my family tree! (I'm an accountant!)
Many thanks for these excellent leads!  :) :)

When I get the chance, I'll check out the other Diggles searching on the site.

Hi Grahamd,

I am only new to Rootschat myself and whilst roaming the site the other day, I came across your enquiry.

I have come across a Frank Diggle, b 14 February 1895 in Lancastershire, England, enlisting in the Australian Army at Claremont, Western Australia on 20 August 1940. His locality on enlistment was Jandakot, WA. His Next of Kin was noted as Hannah Diggle.
I have also found the burial of Francis Diggle who died at Jandakot, WA on 6 October 1948 aged 53.

I have a more information on both this Frank's Army Record and burial. If you thing that this may be your Grandfather, let me know and I will send it off to you.

Good luck with your research.
Tissy ::)

Dear Tissy

Thanks a lot for this information. I came across the same chap in a different part of the RootsChat website (emigrants to Australia message board).

I think the two references you have refer to the same person (both related in some way to Hannah), but not the Frank Diggle I was looking for. My grandfather was never referred to as Francis, nor were the many other Franks in the family tree; Francis was buried as a catholic, which hasn't been a feature of the Diggles that I know of. That's not to say that people don't change their religion or style their names differently.

My grandafther was born in 1892, but might have lied about his age in order to join up in WW2. I have been able to find the source of the two records you mention. Do you have other information which might help to be more decisive about Frank/Francis? Do you have an interest in Diggle family tree, or is this just something you came across?

Thanks for responding. :) :) :)

Best wishes
Graham

Hi Graham,

Sorry that I can't be of more help, the only extra info I have came from the WW11 Nominal Roll and the burial details both of which you seem to have. Also, Hannah Diggle died in Bunbury WA in 1983 aged 94. and there is no reference to the birth of a Francis Diggle in WA.

I don't have any direct interest in the Diggle family, I was only looking to see if I could help out. I have checked Victorian Deaths to 1985 and NSW BDM looking for Frank but to no avail. I had the same thought as you regarding the age change if it was your Grandfather who enlisted in WW11.

Good luck with your search.

Regards,
Tissy

hi there graham...i have discovered using my own DNA and family oral history that my paternal grandfather was indeed an Englishman and a merchant seaman. I have been in contact with a presumed second cousin in the UK and the connection is very strong. There is a certain DNA relationship. The name is different but when records were searched in the UK no record of birth ever turned up. Now I have a name.
Contact me if you need more information. I do know what became of him.
