Diggle - my missing grandfather
« on: Friday 05 January 07 13:58 GMT (UK) »
I'm just starting research into the family tree. My grandfather was a merchant seaman who failed to return from a voyage in about 1926. The family story is that he was injured and missed the boat home, and subsequently never came back (to his wife and 4 children). I don't have information on which port he was left in. My father believes he was with P&O.

His full name: Frank Moreton Diggle. D.o.b. 1892.

Any suggestions for how to pick up the story in Australia?

Welcome to family history,grahamd,

Have a look at this website of the National Arcihves, Kew.   It will tell you what records there are available for Merchant Seaman.

long link to TNA

Then there is this one for the Merchant Navy Association

http://www.mna.org.uk/

This site is part of the Merchant Navy Association.

http://www.red-duster.co.uk/PANDO.htm

All worth scolling around looking for info on crews & research help

Good Luck with your search, don't be afraid to ask any of them for help, a polite enquiry may yield surprise results, or they can give you a nudge in the right direction.

What distict did his family live in ?  A look at the 1901 census may give you his parents & any siblings.

Wow! These look very much like my grandfather's family. Frank was born in Todmorden, as far as I know. He married in Liverpool (to Charlotte Codman, a member of the "Punch and Judy" Codmans) in 1915.

Is this part of your family tree?

Many thanks for this information.
