« on: Saturday 06 January 07 04:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi, My ggrandfather was Emanuel Wolfe. He lived according to the census returns 1861- Spitalfields, 1871- Spitalfields, but was born in Manchester abt.1854I can't find any record of this tho')His father was David , born St.Geo.Hanover Square abt. 1810 and mother was Mary ,born Hull, Yorkshire abt 1819.There was also another son Alfred born Liverpool abt. 1847 , who I also cannot find a birth record of .Emanuel is living apart from the family in 1871 but still in the same area and working as a brushmaker. In 1874 he arrived in Timaru New Zealand where he married my ggrandmother Julia Mary savage and they had 11 children.I would love to have some more info on the family , if anyone can help.
Cheers from NZ

Yes, it is strange.I guess they could be related. My Emanuel was in NZ by 1881 and I can't find the rest of the family anywhere.

Were your family carvers and gilders? I have Woolf(e)/Wooff(e) families in London, many in the Shoreditch area, and the name Emmanuel was common in that group.

Not that I know of .The father david seems to have been a broom maker and Emanuel  is a brushmaker in the 1871 census. When he arrived in NZ he is listed as a rough carpenter. The other son Alfred is not given any occupation but his wife Eliza is a hawker (brooms)
thanks

The address in 1861 was 38 Fashion ST., Emanuel was still there in 1871 living with other families but the rest were in St Vincents St. (This is what it looks like anyway)Mile end old Town.
