Hit two brickwalls with the Lander family
« on: Monday 08 January 07 17:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Going round in circles today with two problems with this family and was hoping someone can give me a shove in the right direction.

Right Lander(s) Launder(s) family.

Have found 13 children born between 1782 and 1805 in Albourne, West Sussex
Elizabeth 1782, Thomas 1783, William 1785, Ann 1787, George 1788, Mary 1790, John 1791, Katherine 1793, Lydia 1795, Barbara 1797, Phillis 1799, Henry 1801 and James 1805.

Found the birth details for some and baptisms for all on familyhistoryonline.net and IGI extracted records.  All have parents William Launder and Ann.

That's my first problem - looking on the IGI and Sussex Marriage Index I cannot find a possible marriage for William and Ann in Albourne.  There is a possible 1775 in Binstead but that seems a bit far away and I haven't managed to find a birth for William.  I reckon he must have been born about 1760.

The only possible I can find is Clayton 1752 to George and Mary.  Possible as I guess Clayton is not that far from Albourne.

Second problem is William born 1785, I have tracked his 6 children
born Twineham:
John 1812, Elizabeth 1813, Henry 1815, Mary 1818
born Albourne:
Frances 1821 and Ann 1824

Again have found births from census records and IGI and familyhistoryonline.net, all have parents William and Elizabeth.  Do you think I can find a marraige for a William and Elizabeth.  No chance.  I reckon they must have married about 1810.

Unfortunately I have not managed to find an 1841 census for William and Elizabeth and by the 1851 where he is lodging he is a widower.

If anyone is able to help I would be most grateful and apologies this is so long winded!

Hi Kerry,
Try the WSCC Poor Law database under those spellings, something might strike a chord  :)

Well I had a look at the Poor Law Database held by WSCC and I found a Settlement examination for a William Launders in Cowfold dated September 1807, wife Elizabeth Launders.  Foreign Parish - Twineham and Foreign Parish Albourne.  Great looks like mine, especially as the comment is now lives in Twineham, born in Albourne, in 1804 bound apprentice to Joseph Baker of Albourne, wheelwright.

Doesn't give me date of their marriage but it adds to proof that they did marry.  Oh and it mentions a child - William Launders presumably born sometime before 1807.  Didn't know about him!

Hi Kerry,

I am afraid this isn't much help, but William (1786), can be found living in Bolney on the 1841 census.

On Ancestry, it is transcribed as Wm Lauder, he is a lodger with a John and Elizabeth Denton, no wife or children I am afraid.

The reference is H0107/1111/3, Folio 7, Page 6

Kath

Thanks for that, I will have a look.  He was lodging in 1851 so it could be him.

Kath

Thank you :) :)

I have just realised it is him, he was lodging in Bolney in 1851, so Elizabeth must have died before 1841!

And it is definitely Lander not Lauder, I think I will do some more searching on Lauder and see if anymore come up.

Thanks Jane

I tend to forget about its existence, but it can be really useful!
