O'Byrne's Naval Biography of 1849 has an entry for Lieut.Thomas Hamilton (b. 1 Aug 1801) that shows he married Ann Miller of Rossyvolan House, Ballintree, Co Donegal on 28 Dec 1828, and that they had four sons and three daughters.

He lead quite an interesting life joining the navy as an able seaman taking part in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 with America. He subsequently served with the Coast Blockade Service where he was severely wounded in a fight with smugglers. He later transferred to the Coastguard Service and was Chief Officer at Larne CG Station in 1840.

I you were looking to take Thomas Hamilton back a further generation, the National Archives hold the Lieut. Passing Certificate  for a Thomas Hamilton who passed his board in 1818 this seems a strong possibility and is in ADM 107/50 pages 398-400, and ADM 6/115 page 99, the first includes details of his birth.

I didn’t see anyone mention the Ulster Directory of Doctors, so I thought I’d have a look.  I don’t think this has anything new, but you never know...

I’ve a funny feeling I’ve got a tenuous link to the Hamiltons via my McCausland ancestors from Limavady.  Whatever the link is I wasn’t sure enough about it to put it in my family tree...
